Stop 05 - ss Great Britain

Stop 05: ss Great Britain, Brunel's iron steamship preserved in her original Bristol dockyard. Opening hours, ticket tips, annual-pass value, full access info.

The historic ss Great Britain ship in her Bristol dry dock at twilight

Stepping into the Great Western Dockyard feels like a journey back to 1843. The ss Great Britain is not just a museum - she is a living testament to Isambard Kingdom Brunel’s audacity. When she was launched she was the largest vessel afloat, the first iron-hulled steamship to cross the Atlantic, and the precursor to every modern ship.

What to see

Start your visit beneath the glass sea - a specialised dehumidification chamber preserves the iron hull and allows you to walk right under the ship’s massive screw propeller and look up at a hull the size of a cathedral. Above deck, explore the meticulously restored cabins, from the opulent First Class dining saloon to the cramped steerage quarters where most passengers actually travelled.

Do not miss the Being Brunel museum next door, which offers a deep dive into the mind of the engineering genius through his personal diaries, spectacles, and a reconstructed drawing office that smells - accurately - of varnish and pipe smoke.

How long to stay

To fully experience the ship, the dockyard and the two museums, allow at least three to four hours. The site is extensive, and there are many interactive exhibits that demand a slower pace. Families with children under 10 should allow longer.

Practical info

The ship is fully accessible with lifts to all levels, including the dry dock. Audio guides are available in several languages and are included in the ticket price.

An annual-pass ticket (one year of return visits for the same price as a single adult admission) is the best deal in Bristol for rainy days. The on-site Dockyard Cafe serves reasonable lunches; the Brunel Buttery nearby is a cheaper, better choice for chips. See our ss Great Britain attractions page for ticket tips and booking links.
